Well, I would suggest getting a finch feeder with thistle food, this time of year is great for American Goldfinch and the Lesser Goldfinch. Also black oil sunflower attracts them as well. A hummingbird feeder is another choice and a birdbath is a MUST. You might want to check with the "landlords" many get upset because uneaten seed brings "critters". We are, right now, trying to get a vole out of the house in a humane way.....so far he/she is having a great life....UGH!

I've noticed that the big striped sunflower seeds attrack grossbeaks, they are so pretty. We always leave whole peanuts out for the scrub jays, their antics are a delight to watch, and every year they raise their babies in our yard.....it is tooo funny to see a fledgling jay trying to crack a peanut shell!

Enjoy, and make sure you get that birdbath. In the summer, when it's extremely hot here, we get cooper hawks that just sit in the bath. The birdfeeders are still active, I guess they know, after a few years, that the hawks are way too hot to hunt/eat...who knows.....

I need some help attracting birds to my feeder. I'm
in an apartment on the ground level across from an
open park, so there aren't many trees immediately
nearby (although some riparian habitat is a few blocks
away). I've been using the usual mix - millet,
sunflower, etc - and getting the usual birds - finches
and doves. Oh, and turkeys. :-)
I'm interested in some ideas on what species are
available to attract - orioles? - and how to attract
them, given my description of the habitat. I've left
different types of suet out, but it's gone untouched.
The evening sun is now falling on the feeders, and my
bedroom is a great blind - I should be able to get
some really great photos. All I need is the species
and some attractive potted plant perches.
Thanks for any help!
Brian
